Living Our Practice:  The Five Principles of Tula+ Yoga

This blog will help you learn more about what motivates us at Tula+ Yoga.  Of course, yoga is at the core of all we do here, and yoga itself is a rich and powerful system of philosophy and practice. In creating and operating a yoga studio, however, we have challenged ourselves to more deeply consider what it means to offer and teach yoga in the context of our lower/outer Cape Cod community. These five principles guide how we operate—from the classes and workshops we offer, to the teachers we hire, and to how we interact with each other. Thanks for taking the time to learn a little more about what we stand for:  wellness, wisdom, commitment, courage, and community. These values shape the way we practice on the mat and the way we live beyond it. Together, they form the heart of who we are as a studio and as a yogic community.

Wellness

Wellness is more than the absence of illness—it is the presence of vitality, balance, and contentment. Through yoga, we strengthen the body, focus the mind, and calm the spirit. Off the mat, wellness is reflected in the choices we make every day: how we rest, how we nourish ourselves, and how we honor the rhythms of life.

Wisdom

Wisdom is found in listening deeply—to our bodies, our breath, and our hearts. In practice, it’s knowing when to push forward and when to rest. It’s the recognition that strength and ease can coexist. Beyond the mat, wisdom grows through reflection, humility, and experience. It teaches us that yoga is not about perfection but about presence.

Commitment

Commitment is what turns intention into transformation. It’s the steady return to the mat, even on days when motivation feels low. It’s the willingness to show up for ourselves and for one another. Commitment also extends to our relationships—with teachers, fellow students, and the wider community. It is staying the course, not because it’s always easy, but because it’s deeply meaningful.

Courage

It takes courage to walk into a yoga room, to practice in a group, and to reveal ourselves to others.  Yoga invites us to be brave. Sometimes that means stepping into a new pose; other times it means simply showing up when life feels heavy. Courage on the mat is mirrored in life off the mat: the willingness to take risks, to speak our truth, to stand up for what matters, and to embrace change even when it’s uncertain.

Community

While yoga is a personal journey, it thrives in community. The energy of practicing together amplifies our individual efforts. At Tula + Yoga, community shows up in the warmth of a welcome, the quiet connection of shared breath, and the laughter that lingers after class. Beyond the studio, community is the compassion and kindness we extend to those around us.

Living Our Principles

Together, these principles—wellness, community, courage, wisdom, and commitment—are more than words. They are living practices that remind us of what matters most. When we embody them, yoga becomes more than movement. It becomes a way of living with awareness, compassion, and purpose.
